Something in the post
In the middle of the night, a tiny star fell into Fern’s postbox. It was warm, gold, and sniffling. “I took a wrong turn at the moon,” it said.
Fern was only a little fox, but she took deliveries seriously. She wrapped the star in a scarf and set off for the tallest hill.
At the first stream, a frog offered a lily-pad ferry. “Special delivery,” Fern explained. “Then we had better hop to it,” said the frog.
A little help
At the forest, an owl lit the path with a jar of fireflies. At the cliff, a bear lifted Fern onto a high branch. At the last steep slope, the wind gave her a gentle push.
The star grew brighter every time someone helped. By the top of the hill, it was glowing through the scarf.
“I can see my house!” the star cried. But the sky was still a very long way away. Fern’s ears drooped. She had come so far.
All the way home
“You carried me when I couldn’t shine,” said the star. “Now I think I can do the rest.” It rose from the scarf, slowly at first, then like a golden balloon.
Fern watched it settle beside the moon. A new constellation twinkled into view: a frog, an owl, a bear, and one little fox.
Every night after that, Fern checked her postbox. Mostly, she found letters. But she always kept a spare scarf beside the door. Just in case.
